There is no single definition of a family office. Everyone seems to have a different version. I wrote a really long my own for the Bloomberg Tax portfolio (Bloomberg liked it, so it that is what we went with.)

We can't define "family office". That's not a problem — that's the point. A family office is a business you create: your objectives, your goals, your family. No two families build the same one.

Jeffrey Rosen, CPA, CGMA, MBA and I just published "Defining the Family Office," the first article in FD's new Family Offices series. It starts with the definition because that's where every engagement starts: figuring out what this family, specifically, is building.

Share it with anyone building a family office — or anyone running one without calling it that yet.
